Description
Jovsi Nature Park covers 460 hectares of marshy meadows along the Sotla River between the Kapela Hills. The area is protected as a natural monument and part of the Natura 2000 network.
Biodiversity
Jovsi is a remarkably rich floodplain and wetland ecosystem. Natural conditions and extensive farming provide habitats for around 60 bird species. Among them are species of European importance: white‑tailed eagle, roller, black stork, and corncrake. Two species living here are considered endangered in Europe: corncrake and red‑backed shrike. Quails, grasshopper warblers, and reed warblers are also common.
Wildlife
Beyond birds, many other animals thrive in the Jovsi Nature Park. The regulated Šica stream and former river oxbows are ideal breeding grounds for amphibians. On riverside plants, visitors may spot the marsh fritillary butterfly.
Plant Life
The park hosts 132 plant species, including rare ones such as adder’s‑tongue fern, marsh orchid, hairy buttercup, and common duckweed.
Koščev Path
Visitors can explore the park via the Koščev Path, a 1 km trail leading from Kapela to the edge of Jovsi. The path is marked with information boards. At its end stands a viewing tower, while the village center offers an information room with panels and interactive displays.
