Pišece Castle

Description

The remarkable Pišece Castle stands on a rocky hill amidst the forested slopes of Orlica. It was first mentioned in written sources in the early 14th century, although it most likely existed much earlier. The Pišeče Knights, mentioned in the 13th century, were probably its first stewards. From the late 16th century, the noble Moscon family owned the castle.

The castle is situated on a small conical hill on the southern slope of Orlica, hidden among the surrounding forests. From a distance, it is clearly visible, but as one approaches, it disappears into the landscape. The castle has an irregular polygonal shape, the result of centuries of development and reconstruction. Its Romanesque tower, despite later Baroque and Historicist additions and renovations, still dominates the rest of the structure.

Next to the castle lies a beautiful English park, featuring a 50-meter-high sequoia and a pond that lend the estate an aristocratic touch. A walking trail leads to the castle from the center of Pišece, passing by the Pleteršnik Homestead, the lower pond, and through the restored English park up to the castle itself.

If you plan to visit the highest peak in the Municipality of Brežice, be sure not to miss this magnificent castle.

Pišece Castle is not open to the public.
