Description
The medieval Bizeljsko Castle stands proudly on a rocky hill above the village of Bizeljsko. The building, believed to have its origins in the Romanesque period, was first explicitly mentioned in historical records in 1404. Among its notable owners were the Counts of Tattenbach, and later, from 1858 until the nationalization after World War II, the Princes of Windischgrätz. Like most castles in Slovenia, Bizeljsko Castle evolved gradually over centuries, with its present appearance being the result of numerous reconstructions and extensions.
Today, the castle is home to the Klakočar family, who have over 50 years of winemaking tradition and cultivate 30,000 organically grown grapevines. Visitors are warmly welcomed to discover a rich and unique selection of fine wines from regular vintages and a variety of exquisite late-harvest wines — truly something for every taste and occasion.
A special highlight of their collection is the rare and historically significant indigenous variety “Rumeni plavec”. During a wine tasting in their beautifully rustic castle cellar, which seats up to 60 guests, you are sure to find the perfect wine for any occasion.
Their castle wine cellar, named WISSEL, opens its historic doors to visitors on weekends, holidays, or by prior arrangement (especially recommended for larger groups).
