Between the Hills and Beneath the Ground

Description

Two Faces of Wine Tradition

The destinations of Dolenjska and Čatež & Posavje combine rich cultural and natural heritage with diverse opportunities for unforgettable experiences. Among picturesque hills, rivers, and vineyards, tradition, nature, and modern offers intertwine, giving visitors an authentic insight into the life of our region.

Both destinations are renowned for their unique wine specialties – the vineyard cottages ”zidanice” of Dolenjska and the ”repnice” of Posavje – which together co-create the story of wine-growing Slovenia.

Vineyard cottages

The rolling landscape of Dolenjska is dotted with charming vineyard cottages, once used to store tools and young wine. During harvest time, locals would also use them as resting places.

Vineyard Cottage Experiences

Today, many owners welcome guests into these rustic gems, especially at Trška Gora, home to the popular Open Vineyard Cottages every weekend. Here you can taste local wines, most famously the indigenous cviček – a refreshing blend of red and white grape varieties – as well as sparkling wines and other specialties.

Vineyard Cottage Retreat

Many vineyard cottages have been transformed into comfortable retreats in rustic or modern style, perfect for a weekend escape among the vines. Under the brand “Vineyard Cottages Tourism”, they offer peace, unspoiled nature, intimacy, local cuisine, regional products, and plenty of opportunities for active holidays.

Repnice

A special story of Posavje are  repnice – underground cellars dug into quartz sand. , once used by locals to store crops and wine. Today, they have been transformed into magical wine cellars, where the mysterious underground atmosphere blends with the rich wine tradition. Entering a repnica feels like stepping into another world – silent and mysterious, yet full of warmth, brought to life by the hosts with their stories, wines, and local delicacies.

A visit to Posavje will take you among the Bizeljsko hills, where repnice complement an exceptional wine heritage. The experience is truly unique: as you descend into the cool depths, time seems to stop as the stories of the past light up, and at the same time you feel the pulse of today’s vibrant wine and culinary culture. It is an authentic, one-of-a-kind experience that you can only find here.

The Posavje Wine region

In both destinations, wine is as important a part of culture as food itself. The people of Posavje and Dolenjska truly live by the old Slovenian wisdom: “Wine is food.” From established winemakers to those just starting out – on both banks of the Sava River, in the vineyard cottages of Dolenjska, in the repnice of Posavje, in modern wineries or with small family winemakers – all of this forms part of the rich wine tradition that leaves a strong mark on Slovenia’s wine identity.

Discover our wines

In Dolenjska, the spotlight is on cviček, a truly unique wine specialty. In Posavje, however, the leading role belongs to Modra Frankinja (Blaufränkisch), thriving on the hills of Bizeljsko and Sremič. Along with red and white Bizeljčan and many varietal wines, it creates the recognizable wine identity of the region. A special place also belongs to the sparkling wines of Posavje – elegant, fresh, and festive – blending tradition with a modern touch. Crafted with knowledge, dedication, and passion, they pair perfectly with both casual gatherings and top gastronomy, proving time and again that Posavje is full of delightful surprises.
