Heritage of Posavje

Cultural remains of Posavje go back a long way, up to 4,000 years before our count. We found them in Ajdovska cave, which is also open for sightseeing. Late Roman remains from the 4th to 6th centuries of our count are available for sightseeing in Ajdovski Gradec. Ajdovski Gradec is one of the largest Old Christian sites in the Alps. Even a little older are the excavations in Neovindum. At the end of the 19th century, a burial ground and numerous items from the 1st and 2nd centuries of our count were discovered there.

If, however, Posavje is really recognizable by something, it is the medieval castles. Many are in ruins and inaccessible, but nine are well preserved, each with their own surprises. In the Sevnica castle you can visit the wine cellar of the Blue Frankish. Rajhenburg Castle boasts a history of trapist monks. The Podsreda castle, among other things, offers medieval cuisine. Raka Castle has recently been renovated and boasts an extensive Baroque collection of items. The Mokrice Castle is a hotel. In the Brežice Castle there is a regional museum with one of the most beautiful baroque halls in Slovenia.

Particularly special is the Cistercian monastery Kostanjevica na Krki with its gallery Božidar Jakac. One of the largest exhibition spaces in Slovenia surprises with the richness and beauty of the collection, and often also hosts temporary exhibitions.
